Nervous about installation day? Here is exactly what happens when our F-Gas certified engineers install your single split AC — from arrival to final test, plus how to prepare your home.
So you have booked your single split air conditioning installation with Future Smart Electrical. Here is a complete, practical walkthrough of exactly what happens on installation day — so you know what to expect, how to prepare, and how long it takes.
Preparing Your Home Before Installation Day
A small amount of preparation makes a big difference:
- ✓Clear the area around the planned indoor unit location. Our engineers need a clear 2-metre zone for safe access.
- ✓Identify your preferred outdoor unit position. It needs good airflow and should not blow hot air directly towards a neighbour's window or garden.
- ✓Let us know about any pipe routing preferences. If you want pipes concealed inside walls rather than external trunking, tell us in advance — it affects preparation and cost.
- ✓Ensure parking access for our van. We carry ladders, drills, and the outdoor unit.
How Long Does Installation Take?
A straightforward single-room installation typically takes 4–6 hours. More complex jobs — longer pipe runs, difficult access, new dedicated electrical circuit — can take a full day.
Typical timeline:
The Core Drill: What to Expect
The core drill is a 65–80mm hole through your external wall for the refrigerant pipes and electrical cable. It is the noisiest and dustiest part of the process.
Our engineers use dust sheets, vacuum-equipped drills, and protective coverings to minimise mess. The hole is sealed with a foam bung and weatherproof mastic sealant once the pipes are through. The drill noise lasts 10–15 minutes maximum.
Pipe Routing and Trunking
Refrigerant pipes are wrapped in insulation and typically run along the outside of the building in white or grey PVC trunking. The trunking is neat, weatherproof, and designed to blend with your property's exterior.
If you prefer pipes routed inside (concealed within the wall or ceiling), discuss this with us before installation day. Internal routing takes longer and costs more but delivers a completely invisible result.
The Pressure Test: A Critical Safety Step
Before any refrigerant is introduced, our F-Gas certified engineers pressure-test the refrigerant circuit with nitrogen. This verifies there are no leaks in the pipe joints. The circuit is held under pressure for a set period and monitored. If pressure holds, we proceed to refrigerant charging.
This step is legally required and is one reason why uncertified installers are dangerous — they often skip or rush pressure testing, leading to refrigerant leaks and system failure.
Commissioning and Your First Run
Once installed and tested, we commission the system. This involves:
You will see the system cooling (or heating) within minutes of commissioning.
