Essex consistently ranks among the sunniest counties in the UK, making it ideal for solar PV. But not every home is equally suited. Here's how to assess your property's solar potential.

Essex consistently ranks among the sunniest counties in England, receiving around 1,600–1,700 hours of sunshine per year. This makes it an excellent location for solar PV — but the suitability of your specific property depends on several factors.

Roof Orientation and Pitch

South-facing roofs at a pitch of 30–40 degrees are ideal for solar panels in the UK. However, east- or west-facing roofs can still generate 80–85% of the output of a south-facing system. North-facing roofs are generally not suitable.

Roof Condition and Space

Solar panels are typically installed for 25+ years, so your roof should be in good condition before installation. You'll need enough unshaded roof space — a typical 4kWp domestic system requires around 25–28 square metres.

Shading

Shading from trees, chimneys, or neighbouring buildings significantly reduces output. Modern micro-inverter and power optimiser systems can mitigate the impact of partial shading, but it's still an important consideration.

Planning Permission

Most domestic solar installations in England don't require planning permission under permitted development rights. Exceptions include listed buildings, conservation areas, and some flat roofs. We handle all planning queries as part of our service.

How Much Can You Generate?

A typical 4kWp system in Essex generates around 3,400–3,800 kWh per year — enough to cover 60–80% of an average household's electricity consumption. With a battery storage system, you can increase self-consumption to 90%+.

Financial Returns

With current electricity prices, a 4kWp system with battery storage typically pays back in 6–9 years. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for excess electricity exported to the grid.

MCS Certification

Future Smart Electrical is MCS-certified, which is required for SEG payments and government incentives. All our solar installations come with a 10-year workmanship warranty.
